Very Rare Admiralty Glass Fire Grenade Extinguisher Glass fire grenades were early fire extinguishers, manufactured from about 1860 into the early 20thC. The moulded glass spheres were filled with salt water, sealed with cork & cement and designed to be thrown at the base of a fire. The grenade I have for auction here is a very rare early one made for the British Admiralty for use by Royal Navy. All fire grenades were made to be destroyed and unlike others, like the Harden Star brand, these Admiralty ones were not sold for domestic or commercial use. As a result very few have survived. Measuring 5½” in height, 4¼” in diameter and weighing 360g or 12.7oz. It is mould blown; the mould lines are visible at the rim and there are 18 vertical ribs. It is in great condition with no chips, cracks or restoration; there are a few surface faults, bubbles and inclusions in the glass from manufacture. Most of my items are vintage or antique and as such may have a few very minor marks or scratches consistent with age.
