The Contempra is a telephone designed and produced by Northern Electric beginning in 1967. Contempra was the first phone designed in Canada. Contempra was developed in 1968 for the Northern Electric Company (a predecessor of Nortel) by industrial designer John Tyson. Tyson was the first industrial designer hired by Northern Electric at the start of its independent life as a Canadian firm, after the end of Northern Telecom’s ten-year licensing agreement with its American parent, Western Electric. Northern Electric Company, the manufacturing arm of Bell Canada, used designs licensed from Western Electric, which was associated with AT&T. When the agreement expired in 1966, young industrial designer John Tyson and his team at Northern Electric developed the Contempra phone.
