Columbus Caravels 1893 Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoon Nina, Pinta & Santa Maria - Very Rare This auction is for an Antique, Sterling Silver, Souvenir Spoon dated "1893". The bowl of the spoon depicts a very detailed drawing of Christopher Columbus's Nina, Santa Maria ships. Each ship is amazingly detailed from the bow to stern and even includes the crow's nest on each ship. T are ripples under the ships that represent water. Beneath the water, on the bowl of the spoon, are the words Pinta, Santa Maria, Nina. This is a VERY RARE Spoon!! The handle of the spoon is also incredibly detailed with the rudder wheel of a ship and braided rope. The braided rope is going around the wheel and encircles the year "1893". That is followed by the words "Columbus Caravels". At the bottom of the handle, leading to the bowl of the spoon, is an eagle with his wings spread wide open. The back of the spoon reads "Sterling' and the name "Moore and Leding". History: Christopher Columbus departed from Spain on August 3, 1492, on a fleet of three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Nina and Pinta were both smaller, sleeker ships, called caravels. Santa Maria was a larger, round-hulled ship, called a nao. Columbus himself sailed on, and piloted, the Santa Maria. Together, the three ships carried about 120 men, equipment and supplies.
