"The iconic Rolex GMT-Master was originally developed as a collaborative project between Rolex and Pan Am airways. The Rolex GMT was designed as an aviator watch.: The newly introduced fourth hand allowed the display of an additional time, with the corresponding number markings on the outer bezel. Pilots used the second time to display the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which led to the name Rolex GMT-Master."

- Ref. 16750 (The transitional reference 16750 was produced for just a few years, from 1980 until 1988. It was very similar to its predecessor, the 1675 (which has a long production run for 21 years), but introduced a new automatic movement (the calibre 3075) that, for the first time, contained a quick-set date function. The ref. 16750 is best known for introducing the modern glossy black dial with applied white-gold hour markers to the GMT range.

- Movement: Cal. 3075 (27 Jewels, 28800 frequency) - is an automatic watch movement with a fixed central 24 hour hand and date wheel. Only used in the Rolex GMT-Master (Ref. 16750) from 1981 through 1988, Cal. 3075 was very similar to the more widespread Cal. 3035 and the larger Cal. 3000 family of movements. The GMT-Master was updated in 1988 to become the Ref. 16700, with Cal. 3175.
